We urge you to support calls to cancel Haiti’s “Debt”. In the US, 72 Congress-people signed Representative Maxine Waters’ letter calling on the President of the World Bank to cancel Haiti’s debt, so Haiti can use its money for healthcare and other survival needs. 40% of Haiti’s debt was run up under the Duvallier regime, the US-backed dictatorship that stole millions from Haiti, killing and torturing thousands of people.
Haiti owes nothing – but the world owes a huge debt to Haitian people.
Their 1804 revolution was first to overthrow slavery, making the way for emancipation in the region and for liberation movements everywhere.
Lovinsky Pierre-Antoine -- much loved grassroots activist, part of the movement that changed Haiti’s constitution so that the country would never again have a military. The organization he co-ordinates, Fondayson Trant Septamn, was formed by victims of the two military coups against elected President Aristide, a liberation theologian. Lovinsky, a close and loyal colleague of President Aristide, shared his goals and methods: ending poverty and human rights abuses through grassroots mobilization. Lovinsky campaigned tirelessly against poverty, war and starvation and we need him more then ever now.
Our vigil in London, every Wednesday outside the Brazilian embassy, 5-6pm is part of global initiatives taking place in Haiti, London, and Los Angeles along with regular actions in the San Francisco Bay Area, Guyana, Canada and elsewhere.
We especially press Brazil, which heads the UN forces in Haiti since the US coup, to use their resources to secure Lovinsky’s release. Lovinsky represents Haitian people’s spirit of revolutionary resistance, survival and determination. We want him back!
