Disrepair

My impression of Haiti is a country in complete disrepair…buildings, utilities, water, electricity, police, government fiscal management…nothing works in Haiti. I did see one exception. Everyday a garbage truck came by and collected garbage. I found this interesting that somehow the government was able to get that done when they are so ineffective at most everything else. My only conclusion was that garbage piling up makes such a visual statement about government failure that there is a motivation to at least get that taken care of.

So how is it that things don’t get built in Haiti? Haitian men have excellent construction skills. I’ve watched them work. Block, cement, stucco, tile. Quality skills that US contractors pay top dollar for. Is it lack of money in Haiti? Well, yes and no. There is money. It’s just not being allocated to creating anything. To learn why you have to understand the roots of Haitian politics. .

Mon impression d'Haïti est celle d'un pays totalement en mauvais état...immeubles, transports, eau, électricité, police, la fiscalité...rien ne fonctionne en Haïti. J'ai pu, effectivement remarquer une exception. Tous les jours un camion- poubelle vient ramasser les ordures. J'ai trouvé cela amusant que le gouvernement arrive à s'arranger pour que ce soit fait alors qu'il est si totalement inefficace dans presque tous les domaines. Ma seule conclusion était que la vision de piles d'ordures en dit tant sur l'échec du gouvernement que ça les motive au moins pour qu'il s'en occupe.

Alors, pourquoi rien ne se construit en Haïti ? Les Haïtiens sont très doués dans les métiers de construction. Je les ai observé dans leur travail. Briques, ciment, stuc, tuiles. Des dons et talents que les entreprises US payent à prix fort. Est-ce qu'il a un manque d'argent en Haïti ? Bien, oui et non. Il y a de l'argent. Il n'est tout simplement pas alloué pour construire quoi que ce soit. Pour comprendre pourquoi il faut connaître les racines du système politique haïtien.

Haitians know where the problem lies

In all the conversations I had with Haitians I found a recurring theme. Haitians see government and politicians for what they are. Haiti has a culture of mismanagement which goes back to Columbus’s arrival on the island. The Haitian people have suffered corruption, theft, shakedowns and abuse for over 500 years. So Haitians are not under the delusion government is going to come along and fix things. They know government is the problem and not the solution. I found that refreshing and healthy. Haitians know about self-reliance.

So what holds the country together? The answer is found in the Haitian people. Their resourcefulness, their ambition, their talents, their love for education, and their devotion to family all play a role. They face the daily struggles with such grace. It’s humbling to watch them, especially when so many in the world show little appreciation when an easy life is handed to them.

Les Haïtiens savent savent où se trouvent le problème

Dans toutes les conversations que j'ai eu avec les Haïtiens, ressortait un thème récurrent. Les Haïtiens voient leur gouvernement et les politiciens tels qu'ils sont. Haïti a une culture de mauvaise administration qui remonte à l'arrivée de Christophe Colomb sur l'île. Les Haïtiens ont souffert de corruption, vols, abus depuis 500 ans. Aussi, les Haïtiens ne vivent pas dans l'illusion que le gouvernement va réparer la situation. Ils savent que le gouvernement est le problème et pas la solution. J'ai trouvé que c'était une saine attitude. Les Haïtiens savent ce que c'est que l'indépendance.

Alors,qu'est ce qui fait tenir le pays debout ? La réponse se trouve chez le peuple haïtien. Leur ingéniosité, leur ambition, leurs talents, leur amour pour l'éducation et leur dévotion à la famille, tout ceci joue un rôle. Ils font face aux vicissitudes quotidien nes avec tant de grâce. C'est une leçon d'humilité de les observer, surtout quand des personnes dans le monde, apprécier si peu ce qui leur est offert par une vie facile.
