Havana, May 4 (Prensa Latina) Cuba is successfully administering the human recombinant Interferon Alfa 2b nasally and injected to Covid-19 patients, the national director of Epidemiology of the Ministry of Public Health (MINSAP), Dr. Francisco Duran, said on Monday.
In his daily press briefing on the Covid-19 situation, the expert explained that the drug is administered as an injection to all confirmed patients as part of the treatment, while the nasal version is given to people who do not have the disease but are isolated in social assistance centers.
He added that the medication will be administered to all health personnel, who are groups of risk due to their work.
The effectiveness of Interferon Alfa 2b, obtained by the Genetic Engineering and Biotechnology Center (CIGB) in the 1980s, has been proven in other countries, like China, to fight the disease.
In Cuba, it is included in the protocol established by the Ministry of Public Health, in combination with other drugs in the case of confirmed patients, not in the case of patients in a serious or critical state.
Dr. Duran also said, in response to people's concern, that so far, 176 children have tested positive for Covid-19, nine of whom have recovered, while the rest is evolving without complications.
So far, Cuba accumulates 1,668 Covid-19 cases, 69 deaths and 876 recovered patients.
