Dear Interntionalist,

20 years ago this evening the US launched an invasion of Iraq that killed hundreds of thousands. Due to massive protests Canada didn’t formally join George W. Bush’s “coalition of the willing”. But it provided various forms of support for the illegal US invasion. Tomorrow the Coalition to Oppose the Arms Trade’s Richard Sanders will join Yves Engler’s Canadian Foreign Policy Hour to discuss Canada’s contribution to the war and lessons we can learn from this political moment.

REGISTER FOR FOREIGN POLICY HOUR
The need for an independent Canadian foreign policy has never been greater. On Thursday US President Joe Biden will be in Ottawa pushing for Canada to lead a military mission to Haiti. Recently has Ottawa aligned with Washington on the ouster of elected Peruvian president Pedro Castillo and further fuelled the war in Ukraine. The US has also been pressuring Ottawa to adopt a more belligerent policy towards China and to spend large sums on arms. A protest against Biden’s visit is planned on Parliament Hill.

Last week CFPI and Just Peace Advocates criticized the federal government subsidizing anti-Palestinian pogroms. The media release pointed out that Mizrachi Canada provides tax credits for donations to the illegal Israeli settlement of Kedumim, which is run by individuals who celebrated vigilantes burning dozens of Palestinians homes and cars in Huwara, killing one and injuring 100.

Also in case you missed it, we marked International Women’s Day with a rousing call for a feminist foreign policy that goes beyond co-opted language, centres life and understands militarism as antithetical to feminism.

Peace & solidarity,

Bianca Mugyenyi
Director, Canadian Foreign Policy Institute
