Two and a half years after the devastating earthquake of 12 January 2010, Haiti is still facing a profound humanitarian crisis. Hundreds of thousands of victims of the earthquake are surviving with no meaningful shelter. Relatively little housing has been built. A cholera epidemic introduced by UN soldiers in 2010 has stricken more than half a million and killed more than 7,000. The controversial UN military/police mission has no end in sight. Respect for human rights and the rule of law is fragile. Economic reconstruction is mired in conflicting visions for the future of the country and its poor majority.
