Two Exceptional Haitian Jazz Artists

 Buyu Ambroise & Mushy Widmaier

Alix “Buyu” Ambroise

Consummate jazz tenor saxophonist and longtime New Yorker Alix “Buyu”Ambroise weaves together traditional Haitian rhythms with contemporary jazz to create a New World interpretation bridging together two related musical styles, and uniting the oldest nations in the western hemisphere - Haiti and the United States.  Buyu is currently leading his own sextet, Blues In Red.  The group has recently released a new CD entitled Marasa,  a vibrant potpourri of soulful blues and  jazz,  infused with the mesmerizing drums of Afro-Haitian rhythms, all woven together to form a unique sound.  Blues In Red’s repertoire draws freely from the sacred ritual music of the Haitian countryside as well as Haitian pop music, and blends them adeptly into the resonance and style of American jazz. The result is an inspiring new sub-genre in jazz music.

Mushy Widmaier

Mushy Widmaier is a "modern jazz" piano player, with an undertone of Haitian folklore and European classical music.  He fits with ensembles of almost any style, always taking an active and creative role.  He has mastered a repertoire of jazz standards, Haitian folk songs, popular dance music or originals.  Mushy's style is distinguished by his way of setting the mood, improvising solos that build on a theme, reinterpreting and reshaping it in ways that surprise and delight his audiences.
