Dominican Republic Moves To Avert Suspension Threat

St Kitts and Nevis (WINN) The Dominican Republic has taken prompt action to avoid a threat of suspension from Venezuela’s Petro Caribe energy arrangement.

Vincentian Prime Minister Ralph Gonsalves says he has written to the Venezuelan President asking him to suspend Santo Domingo from the programme.

Dr Gonsalves is also advocating that the Dominican Republic be suspended from CARIFORUM, over the September 23 ruling by the country’s constitutional court that strips tens of thousands of Dominicans of Haitian descent of their citizenship.

Santo Domingo-based journalist Jean Michel Caroit says the threat of suspension from Petro Caribe being pushed by Dr Gonsalves is being taken very seriously by the Dominican Government.

Caroit told WINN FM’s The Bigger Picture that last Wednesday after the Gonsalves letter to Dominican President Danilo Medina was made public, the authorities in Santo Domingo announced that they were sending a high level delegation to Caracas.

“That was a very quickly decided journey … and the purpose of the trip was to explain the position of the Dominican government in relation to the court decision,” Caroit said.

The constitutional court ruling is being strongly denounced by former prime minister of Antigua and Barbuda, Lester Bird.

“It is so absolutely racist that it’s almost pathetic,” Bird told WINN FM, adding that Antiguan Prime Minister Baldwin Spencer should make a statement on the Dominican Republic situation.

Lester Bird is promising that an election victory for the Antigua Labour Party would see a new Labour administration taking a very firm stand against the Dominican Republic.

Elections are expected in Antigua and Barbuda in the new year.

The former prime minister says Dominicans in Antigua who qualify for citizenship are given that status, and St John’s should warn Santo Domingo against abusing its own citizens by down-grading their status.
