The inhumane conditions in which women work in the sweat shops in Haiti is repulsive and intolerable.Very often I hear people say :"It is better than nothing" Is it really ?When a young woman must work 10 hours a day for less than 5 dollars ,and at the end of her shift she must satisfy the sexual needs of her supervisor which result of her pregnancy,is it really better for her?
I often criticise the quantity of Ministers that form the haitian government because not only they prevent the meager resources of the country to serve the people ,but also they can not do their jobs because of a lack of humane and financial resources. What is the purpose of having a Minister of labor, a Minister of social affairs , a Minister of feminine conditions while workers and women in particular are being exploited as slaves in these sweat shops?
Yesterday I read with horror the sufferings, the humiliations that some women who used to work in these sweat shops endured. After 4 or 5 years enduring these humiliations they quit because they realize they are poorer than when they started. Not only they have one or two more babies from these supervisors they have to feed, but their health also is deteriorating. They can no longer endure these long hours of salvery in the sweat shops.
Yet instead of putting an end to these inhumane conditions in the sweat shops the government is jailing the workers who want to organize unions to fight these slaves masters. Rene Preval vetoed a law voted by the Parliament to raise the minimum wage to 4 dollars .79 cents a day. According to Preval's rationale and many others if he allows the minimum wage to increase these sweat shops will go somewhere else. If this was true then Haiti should not have so many unemployed people for the minimum wage is lower in haiti than in any other country in the region.Even in the Dominican Republic the minimum wage is higher than in Haiti. Why the unemployment rate is more than 90% in Haiti?
It is really intolerable that in a civilised world these women must endure so much sufferings and humiliations to have the right to work in a country where there are so many things that needed to be done. Most of them come from the countryside. A country that is importing food from the United States and the Dominican Republic for more than 1 billion dollars every year why can't these women work to produce food to feed the people? Why do they have to work as slaves in these sweat shops that are not producing anything for the country?
Are these sweat shops really the best way to develop the country economically? Do Haitians really believe if they have that potential they will be in Haiti and not in Mississipi , Alabama, Arkansas or Texas ? President Lincoln said : I will never be a slave therefore I can not be a slave owner. Unfortunately there are some slave owners in Haiti and in many parts of the world. The sad reality is the american government supports these governments that tolerate these inhumane conditions in which these women work and overthrow the government that fights for social justice. What is intolerable in the United States is promoted in Haiti. This is the reason why the Clintons like Martelly so much. The american government will never help mercenaries to overthrow Martelly, but they will pay them to overthrow Aristide on two occasions. The boat people are the consequences of this foreign policy toward Haiti.
