A Good Question
How come Senators and Deputies have not spoken about the possibility of impeaching under the implied powers given to it by the Constitution?
The most likely answer to this question is that it is cultural.
Understand, Haiti is not only still leaning the practice of democracy, it is also making up for lost time, for decades of dictatorship, coups, occupation, and manipulation by political interests, such as those in the “Core Group”.
In all intents and purposes, I am American and young, like many of you reading this. But even being young, I spent the first four years of my life living under the brutal and oppressive dictatorship of the Duvaliers before moving to the United States. My parents, your parents, really lived the dictatorship of the elder Duvalier father, as well as many of the people who are in the different branches of the Haitian government. They are not predisposed to think “American”.
Many young Haitians, especially those “Americanized”, such as myself, know the feeling of being made to feel like a spoiled brat or naïve because you expect things to be a certain way or believe things are a certain way. I experience this often, but relevantly, I remember in December 2011, when I began writing about elections being overdue; then it was just one week overdue. Everyone, the older Haitians in government or in politics, colleagues in the media, even some of my readers, laughed, clowned and literally told me to “go and sit down somewhere”. Now look where we are today.
None the less, I have made much progress in bringing the Haitian people to know their rights and defend them. I see it every day, because quite frankly, if it were up to Martelly and the “Core Group”, Haiti would have long been in a full-fledged dictatorship, but I write, people read, and by my example I have led.
I believe the remaining members of the Haitian Legislature will come to an understanding of their power and will look to impeach Martelly, establish a provisional Executive administration, and lead us to free, fair, and democratic general elections in 2015.
