The last sovereign ruler and first woman ruler of HAWAII, Queen Liliuokalani, was born on this day in 1838. By the time she took the throne in 1891, a new constitution had stripped most of the monarchy's power in favor of wealthy American businessmen. After she attempted to restore power to the monarchy and give voting rights to native Hawaiians, the U.S. military deposed her in a 1893 coup and then eventually annexed Hawaii despite the Queen's protests. As a talented musician, Queen Liliuokalani used many of her compositions to celebrate the beauty of Hawaii and its people. Her most famous song, "Aloha 'Oe", became a common cultural symbol for Hawaii.

Au moment de son accession au trône en 1891, une nouvelle constitution avait mis en lambeaux le pouvoir de la monarchie pour favoriser des hommes d'affaires américains( Hum, ça devrait vous rappeler quelque chose.) Après sa tentative de restaurer le pouvoir royal et d'octroyer les droits de vote aux natifs d'Hawaï, l'armée US, en 1893, a fait un coup d'État pour la déstituer. Et, malgré les protestations de la Reine, Hawaï fut annexée. Parce qu'elle était une musicienne talentueuse, la Reine Liliuokalani a composé de nombreuses oeuvres pour célébrer la beauté d'Hawaï et celle de son peuple. Sa chanson la plus fameuse " "Aloha 'Oe", est devenue un symbole culturel pour Hawaï.

Je ne traduis pas le texte du général Smedley Butler, le soldat le plus décoré des USA qui a écrit ce livre fort connu qui s'intitule en français : La guerre est un racket. Cet extrait, le plus emblématique et diffusé, est celui dans lequel il déclare avoir été un mille fois plus grand gangster qu'Al Capone, parce qu'alors qu'Al Capone n'exerçait son racket que dans trois régions, lui avait opéré sur trois continents.

“I spent 33 years and four months in active military service and during that period I spent most of my time as a high class muscle man for Big Business, for Wall Street and the bankers. In short, I was a racketeer, a gangster for capitalism. I helped make Mexico and especially Tampico safe for American oil interests in 1914. I helped make Haiti and Cuba a decent place for the National City Bank boys to collect revenues in. I helped in the raping of half a dozen Central American republics for the benefit of Wall Street. I helped purify Nicaragua for the International Banking House of Brown Brothers in 1902-1912. I brought light to the Dominican Republic for the American sugar interests in 1916. I helped make Honduras right for the American fruit companies in 1903. In China in 1927 I helped see to it that Standard Oil went on its way unmolested. Looking back on it, I might have given Al Capone a few hints. The best he could do was to operate his racket in three districts. I operated on three continents.”
