China wants to do more business with the DR
Chinese companies are looking to invest in the Dominican sugar industry. As reported in Hoy, sugar from sugar cane is used in China's food and pharmaceutical industries, says Xu Yansheng, representative of the Popular Republic of China trade office. He said that a company would be visiting to formalize investments at the end of this year. The company has already made significant investments in Jamaica. Interviewed by Hoy newspaper, Yansheng said there is potential for the country to sell more tobacco, coffee and cacao products in China. Dominican exports to China totaled US$409 million in 2011, up 40% from 2011. Chinese imports were US$1.03 billion, up 6.5% compared to 2011, said Xu. He said that China is the Dominican Republic's second largest trade partner in terms of imports, after the United States. In exports, it is the third, behind the United States and Haiti. As reported in Hoy, Xu said that eight Chinese companies bid in the tender for the two 300 megawatts coal plants called by the Public Electricity Corporation (CDEEE), and two were shortlisted. He said China is also active in solar and wind energy. Also interviewed for the article, Nelson Pena, a member of the Chamber of Commerce and president of Peravia Motors, said that China could finance the acquisition of buses for the Santo Domingo Metro feeder routes. He said the country could come through with a big order in just three months time because it is the world leader in bus units with 50,000 units a year. Mercedes Benz is second with 40,000 units. Pena said the Chinese made buses have US-made engines, German transmission and air-conditioning systems and can compete in price and quality. He estimated the cost at US$70-80,000 per unit. The business representatives announced that the People's Republic of China Trade Show would take place on 26-29 September at the Dominican Fiesta convention center in Santo Domingo. Around 40 Chinese companies will be taking part. Exhibits will include vehicles, motorcycles, construction materials, pharmaceuticals, electrical equipment, hardware and basic consumer goods. www.hoy.com.do/economia/2013/9/8/497550/Encuentro-EconomicoAcuerdoshermandad-enChina-serian-positivos-RD
